A Large and Rare Chinese Celadon Glazed Porcelain Standing Figure of Damo 18th century or earlier the figure depicted standing wearing draped robes, both hands clasped in front of his chest, the face with a stern expression with finely carved eyebrows and beards, all raised on a base in the form of turbulent waves, the figures back bearing a Wanli six-character underglaze blue mark. Height of figure 38 7/8 inches. Estimate $ 40,000-60,000 Provenance: Ex-collection of H. Medill Sarkisian (1909-1993), Denver, Colorado, acquired pre-1960 In overall decent and stable condition, with restoration. Light wear to the glaze and a 4 inch hairline to the glaze appears towards the front the of the figure at the base of his robes. The unglazed surface shows traces of gilt still evident, but appears to have been cleaned or altered in some manner. Restoration to the lower right section of the figure (see images). Height of base 14 7/8 inches.
