Beschreibung:

A. L. FORD] Curiosities of Cricket ... by an Old Cricketer Brighton: D.B. Friend, 1897. 8vo., first leaf with cricket vignette, contemporary green half morocco and marbled boards, top edge gilt, others uncut, original printed front wrapper with woodcut vignette bound in. Provenance : A. J. Gaston (limitation leaf initialled "A. J. G.") -- F. A. Brooke (his name inscribed on limitation leaf in Gaston's hand) -- C. E. M. Wilson (Eagar Catalogue note). FIRST EDITION. No. 13 OF 25 COPIES. Gaston worked for Ford's Brighton publisher, D.B. Friend. With their shared enthusiasm for cricket collecting, they naturally became acquainted, and Ford either gave or sold copies of his anonymous booklet to Gaston only to have his authorship usurped. Gaston's initials appear on the limitation leaf, and he is also identified as the author of Ford's book on the spine of this copy. Ford's emphasis is very much on the whimsical side of cricket. He takes meticulous care to list dates and sources for such matches as Bakers v Millers, Shoemakers v Tanners, Women with bats v Men with broomsticks playing left hand, Handsome v Uglies, Heavy with Sin v Light with Honesty, One Arm v One Leg, and Umbrellas v Bats. Cases are brought to light of a batsman who used a bat "with trap door to enclose ball", a fielder who "jumped on to bystander's horse to ride after the ball", "matches in pocket of batsman ignited by ball bowled", "15 weasels" that "crossed wicket during match", and an unfortunate umpire "ducked in pond for giving an unsatisfactory decision". Two leaves of manuscript notes in Brooke's hand bound in at the end of this copy note further "curiosities" between 1893 and 1904. Goldman p. 72; Taylor p. 38; Padwick 108.
