Beschreibung:

A Hungarian chair back of red and black satin stitch embroidery, (H-7). æThis work (like fabric appliquÒ) is typical of the village of Buszak. One family in the village would create the designs through several generations and sell them to other women to work. The embroidery is almost always black and red, or blue and red, or black and blue. Bought from the maker at her home there. My card index gives 1975 for H-6 and 1977 for this. IÆm sure I must have bought them at the same time.Æ A strip of typical double buttonhole (or square chain stitch) of Kalotaszeg in red, (H-10). See Hofer and Fel, Hungarian Folk Art ill. 609. æThis stitch is very difficult to do - the old grandmother at Lake Balaton taught me how to do it. We could only buy red thread, but inconsistent in dye. Given by widow of BalintÆs professor, Budapest 1975; a linen bag of Kalotaszeg work in light brown, (H-11) Given by widow of BalintÆs professor, Budapest 1975; a cushion cover, or bag, made from a manÆs apron, of Matyo work from MezÛkÛvesd, embroidered with flowers in predominantly orange and pink floss silks, with a deep black silk fringe and a small border painted patterns and discs, 35cm x 41cm, (H-18). Given to a friend in Blewbury, Joan Ells, by a Hungarian and then given to me in 1983; a bag of red Matyo work, 16cm x 24.5cm and an English linen version embroidered with flowers in pinks and blues, 1920s, (H-20); and a linen chair back embroidered in red chain stitch with three plant motifs, the central one with a two-headed eagle and crown, the others of vase of flowers flanked by birds, bobbin lace edge, (H-24). See Embroidered Textiles, p. 163
