A Highly Emotive Group of Items Personally Associated with Surgeon J.H. Reynolds, V.C., of Rorke's Drift Fame (a) A Contemporary Miniature Victoria Cross, mounted en suite with a South Africa 1877-79 Medal of similar size, with clasp 1877-8-9, the pair very fine , with well worn ribands and a double silver riband buckle in a Vaughton & Sons, Birmingham fitted case (b) Beamont-Adams Percussion Revolver, No. 36879, by Trulock & Harris, 4 Dawson Street, Dublin , with 80 original blued finish, in its original maker's wooden case with full accessories, the lid with insert brass roundel inscribed in gothic letters 'J.H.R.' [Also see item (f)] (c) Travelling Mahogany Brass Mounted Medicine Chest, various compartments containing seven glass stoppered medicine bottles, apothecary scales with brass pans and weights, with brass plaque on inner lid inscribed, 'MEDICAL CHEST AND TIME PIECE FORMERLY BELONGING TO MY GRANDFATHER/EMPLOYED BY MY FATHER DURING THE DEFENCE OF RORKE'S DRIFT' [The plaque referred to would have been authorised by Elizabeth Anne Lloyd née Reynolds] (d) Verge Escapement Pocket Watch, by Gower of Dublin [Referred to in (c)], the movement with finely engraved classical mask cock, white enamel dial, gold hands, the movement in full gilt-metal case, circa 1800, in good condition and working order (e) A Silver Presentation Medal, obverse, two standing soldiers and 'ROYAL WELCH FUS.', reverse, 'PRESENTED TO LT. COL. J.H. REYNOLDS, V.C., BY A FEW OLD COMRADES 22 JAN.1929', the 50th Anniversary of the Defence of Rorke's Drift [A watch key which fits the timepiece described in (d) is attached to this Medal] (f) A Black Tooled Leather Pocket Case of Surgical Instruments, with added display gilt name plate inscribed, 'SURGEON MAJOR A.H. REYNOLDS', containing curved needle and gum lancet with tortoiseshell guard, two lancets with tortoiseshell guards, curved bistoury, blunt-pointed dissecting forceps, fenestrated dissecting forceps, ivory trochar and cannula, ligature silk the case stamped, ' Fannin & Co., Dublin ' [This case of instruments was subsequently exhibited by the R.A.M.C. and an applied card to inner flap of the case reads, 'SURGICAL INSTRUMENTS AND PISTOL EMPLOYED DURING THE DEFENCE OF RORKE'S DRIFT 22nd 23rd JAN. 1879 BY LIEUT. COL. J.H. REYNOLDS, V.C., PRESENTED BY HIS DAUGHTER MRS. LLOYD'] (g) Another Pocket Case of Surgical Instruments, containing artery forceps, director, spatula, aneurysm needle and probe, the black leather case stamped, ' Mawson ' (h) Travelling Wooden Case of Postmortem Instruments, containing saw, large-bladed knife, small bladed knife, chisel, hammer with retractor end, silver annula, chain hooks and two universal handles, one for the knives and saw, the other for the hammer and chisel, some items carry the trade stamp, ' Mawson ' (i) Black Leather Small 'Gladstone' Bag, embossed on one side in gothic letters 'J.H.R.' (j) Silver-mounted Ivory Paper-knife (Hallmarks for Birmingham, 1896), stated as having been given to Reynolds on his retirement from the Army (k) A Gentleman's Leather Travelling Bag, lacking almost all standard contents, initials 'J.H.R.' at the top [Also stated as gifted to Reynolds on his retirement]; together with an early photograph of Reynolds in uniform, including a photograph of Elizabeth Anne, aged about 12 years, on reverse (10)
