A GROUP OF NATIVE AMERICAN POTATO PRINT-DECORATED SPLIT-ASH BASKETS Probably Onandaga Indian, New York, 19th century The first a large rectangular lidded basket with applied rim and collar to basket, conforming straight sides and flat base, the sides and top decorated with printed geometric shapes; the second of smaller and similar shape and construction, with printed decoration to sides and embellished with the applied loops; the third an open square basket with applied conforming collar, straight sides and flat base, the outside decorated with printed geometric shapes; the fourth smaller and of similar shape and decoration; the fifth a small open basket with circular applied collar above conforming cylindrical sides on a tall square foot, the sides decorated with printed geometric shapes, the underside inscribed in pencil "M.M. Baldwin 1849"; the sixth an open rectangular basket with applied conforming collar and bentwood handles above straight sides on a flat base, the sides decorated with printed geometric shapes; together with three undecorated Native American split-ash baskets including an open-rectangular basket with applied collar and carved handles above straight sides on a flat base; decorated with some red stained split-strips, a circular basket with conforming collar above tapering sides with squared base, the sides decorated with coiled-splint, and a small circular open-basket with applied collar above tapering sides with squared base 12in. high, 20½in. wide, 14in. deep the largest (9)
