A.E. Ray The Queen's R.), fine, mounted for wearing. London Gazette 9th July 1917 Awarded the Military Medal, No. 5400 Private Albert Edward Ray, 1st Battalion The Queen's Regiment. During the attack on the Hindenburg line at the Sensee River on 23rd April, 1917, as a signaller with his company - 1st wave - was one of a small party who reached the German 2nd line, and showed great coolness and courage. At a critical period, after being seven hours in the German line, the Officer Commanding called for a volunteer to take a message to Battalion Headquarters. He was the first to volunteer, took the message, crossing a patch of country which was kept under heavy continuous fire. He has in a previous action, delivered messages under similar circumstances.
