A Great War D.S.O. group of six awarded to Brigadier-General T.H.S. Marchant, 13th Hussars, founder of the Pony Club DISTINGUISHED SERVICE ORDER, G.V.R.; QUEEN'S SOUTH AFRICA 1899-1902,4 clasps, Tugela Heights, Orange Free State, Relief of Ladysmith, Transvaal (Lt. 13/Hussars); KING'S SOUTH AFRICA, 2 clasps, (Lieut. 13/Hrs.); BRITISH WAR AND VICTORY MEDALS, M.I.D. (Brig. Gen.); DEFENCE MEDAL, contact marks to Boer War pair, otherwise good very fine (6) Footnote D.S.O., London Gazette, 3rd June, 1918: 'For distinguished service in connection with military operations in France and Flanders.' Thomas Harry Saunders Marchant served with the 13th Hussars in South Africa and was present at the relief of Ladysmith including the actions at Colenso and Spion Kop (Queen's medal with 4 clasps, King's medal with 2 clasps). In the Great War Marchant served with his regiment before being appointed Temp. Lieut. Colonel, 2/4th South Lancs. Regiment with whom he served until 4th September, 1918. From 5th September, 1918, until 15th March 1919 he was Brigade Commander of the 126th Infantry Brigade in France, and became Lieut-Colonel of the 5th Dragoon Guards in 1921. He was mentioned in despatches three times and awarded the D.S.O. for his services during the war. For more than 17 years, before his retirement in 1947, he was secretary of the Institute of the Horse and Pony Club. He saw the members of the former rise from 400 to 2,500 and the Pony Club, which he introduced, incorporate 15,000 children He was Show Director of the International Horse Show and it was largely through his efforts that this event was revived in 1934. Brigadier General Marchant died on 17th November, 1952. The lot is accompanied by an album containing numerous portrait and other photographs commission documents and his three M.I.D. certificates.
