A grand piano by Broadwood, London, 1819 The mahogany cross-banded case with cast gilt metal decoration running above the skirting and with gilt metal beading running vertically. Raised on four turned and reeded legs with brass collars. The keywell veneered in rosewood with foliate brass inlay and brass stringing, the nameboard bearing a boxwood plaque inscribed: John Broadwood & Sons, Makers to his Majesty & the Princesses Great Pulteney Street Golden Square, London. Six octave keyboard CC–c4 with ivory naturals and ebony accidentals. English grand action, trichord throughout. Divided bridge. Two pedals, mounted on a lyre controlling keyboard shift and dampers. Inscribed ‘Beveridge’ on the action. Serial number 7895 Length 250cm, width 117cm, case height including lid and leg blocks 39cm. Literature: The Colt Clavier Collection Golden Jubilee 1944–1981, p. 20, (14) G299B. C. F. Colt with Anthony Miall, The Early Piano, ill. p. 71 (but incorrectly described as Broadwood grand serial number 8074). Provenance: Entries for this piano have been found in Broadwood Porters’ books held at the Surrey History Centre: The first dated February 9th 1819 delivering to Mr. Beale in Manchester; the second entry, September 27th 1820 to Savage Esq.
