A grand piano by Broadwood, London, 1800 The mahogany case cross-banded with satinwood and inlaid with kingwood, raised on a trestle stand with four square tapered legs veneered en suite. The keywell with inlaid stringing, and cross-banded with kingwood, the oval plaque inset in the nameboard bearing the inscription: John Broadwood & Son, Makers to his Majesty and the Princesses, Great Pulteney Street , Golden Square, London 1800. The five and a half keyboard FF–c4 with ivory naturals and ebony accidentals. English grand action, trichord throughout. Divided bridge. Two pedals, mounted on a stretcher, controlling dampers and keyboard shift. Serial number 1815 (indistinct) Length 227cm, width 107cm, case height including lid and leg blocks 32cm. Literature: The Colt Clavier Collection Golden Jubilee 1944–1981, p. 8, (11) G297B. Provenance: An entry for this piano has been found in Broadwood Porters’ book held at the Surrey History Centre: 21st July 1800. Addressed: Walter Honeywood Yate Esq.
