A grand piano by Broadwood, London, 1787 The mahogany cross-banded case inlaid with boxwood stringing, raised on a trestle stand with four square legs and brass castors. The keywell veneered in maple, cross-banded with mahogany and inlaid with ebony and boxwood stringing, the nameboard inscribed: Johannes Broadwood Londini Fecit 1787. Great Pulteney Street Golden Square. Bearing an original paper label on the reverse of the nameboard giving ‘DIRECTIONS for TUNING, and KEEPING the GRAND PIANO FORTE / in order.’, this label illustrated on page 73 of The Early Piano. C. F. Colt with Anthony Miall. The five octave keyboard FF–f3 with ivory naturals and ebony accidentals. English grand action, trichord throughout. Single bridge. Two pedals, mounted on the front legs, controlling dampers and keyboard shift. Serial number 208. The second earliest extant numbered Broadwood grand piano and one of only five known with a single bridge. Length 229cm, width 97cm, case height including lid and leg blocks 34cm.
