Beschreibung:

A good quality portrait, oil on board, of William James Bradford an officer of Madras Native Infantry (named to rear and dated 1823), together with a Victorian box containing extensive documents relating to the military career of W J Bradford, members of his family, as well as various related family history records. Also with photographs of relatives. The painting, on a board marked on the rear to R Davy of 83 Newman Street, in oil and of the English school, showing W J Bradford down to below the waist, in his Madras Native Infantry uniform. Coatee, sash and sword belt clearly visible, hat removed from head and visible by the sitter's side. In associated frame, measuring 38cm by 28cm. Document box containing extensive range of documents, including on vellum the commission and promotion letters for William James Bradford (18th Madras Native Infantry and later 35th Madras Native Infantry), his commission appointment dated 1808, Lieutenant dated 1815, Captain dated 1822, Major dated 1832 and more. Other documents include the commission document to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant for Avenel de Biarz William Wykeham Bradford (Royal Dublin Fusiliers), dated to 1899. A variety of original period family photographs also included. Two photographs of Lt.-Colonel Arthur Henry Phillpotts dated 1929, but wearing a uniform based on that of the Crimean War era. Two studio portraits of an officer in uniform, believed to be Avenel de Biarz William Wykeham Bradford (Royal Dublin Fusiliers). A wedding scene, perhaps also of Avenel de Biarz William Wykeham Bradford (Royal Dublin Fusiliers) with Kathleen Emily Phillpotts (married 1904). Three photographs of a pair of boys in different outfits and at different ages. A portrait of an unknown young gentleman and a card wallet of negatives marked 'Kodak' on the front.
