Beschreibung:

A GOOD ENGLISH VIOLONCELLO by Joseph Merlin branded I.Merlin/London below the back button and on the peg-box; the two-piece back of small curl, the ribs similar, the scroll plain, the table of medium to open grain, the varnish of a golden brown colour, the length of back 28 13/16in. (73.2cm.) In case John Joseph Merlin (1735-1803) was born in Huy near Liège and came to England in 1760. He seems to have come from a family of inventors and was himself an extraordinarily innovative mechanic, designing among other novelties an invalid chair and roller-skates. Once, when demonstrating his roller-skates at Carlisle House, he crashed into a valuable mirror while carrying one of his violins. ( John Joseph Merlin The Ingenious Mechanic , Catalogue of the Exhibition at The Iveagh Bequest, Kenwood House, London, 19 July - 26 August 1985, p.86-7). By 1775 Merlin had become a great favourite in the Burney household and was moving in fashionable society. His instruments were made both for general sale and for private patrons. He also "improved" old violins to give them the brighter tone of the Cremonese makers, employing among others assistants who also worked for William Forster ( op. cit. , p.92). The instruments were exhibited at Merlin's Museum, No.11, Princes Street, Hanover Square, which was one of the wonders of late 18th century London.
