A goldwork cover from the Kabul area, c. 1935-40, made by a Muslim girl for her wedding, arranged when she was about 16 years old, 33cm x 33cm, (As-11). It was folded to form a bag and presented to the bridegroom at a ceremony two days before marriage, at which the girl was not present. It contained kohl, to show she was beautiful, sweetmeats to show she could cook, and the embroidery showed that she could sew. Given to a friend when she lived in Afghanistan in the 1950s; an Uzbek Lakai bedding cover, sayegosha, worked in cross stitch and other embroidery, with bright flowers and applied trinkets, (As-13); a wedding cloth of green silk with patched borders worked in chain stitch, and with a triangular amulet with three tassels in the corner, 87cm x 108cm, (As-45). Bought from an Afghan dealer in Peshawar, 1991; and five cut-up strips of embroidery with oval patterns in various colours of flowers of shisha, (As-25). Bought by an English woman in Kabul in c. 1975 and used as a belt, collar and cuffs; this modern work is known as æQuettaÆ
