Finely worked with a central medallion bearing the “wheel of joy” composed of three swirling and interconnected blades, within a chrysanthemum lappet circle in high relief and an incised key fret border. Provenance: British private collection. Old collector’s inscription to base finely painted in black lacquer: “No 182 HOXMO TIBET” Condition: Excellent condition with wear and traces of extensive use as expected from a metalwork from this period. Very slightly warped. Weight: 256.1 grams Dimensions: 16.5 cm This unusual bowl combines various stylistic and technical aspects. While the scalloped petal frieze evolves out of Roman and Central Asian prototypes, the Gankyil medallion is a distinctly Tibetan element. The vessel is a repoussé-work from a massive copper-bronze sheet and bears both fine incision work and a thick layer of superb fire-gilding indicating its importance at ritual ceremonies of the period.
