A German gilt-metal striking square table clock with alarm Unsigned. Circa 1580 The gilt dial plate with outer Roman chapter ring with touchpieces and inner Arabic chapter ring (13 to 24), the restored blued steel hand curved around the foliate pierced and engraved bell dome centred by an engraved alarm disc rotating against an inner skeletonised chapter ring (I to XII), the movement with square brass plates secured by four square section gilt-brass pillars, the going train with large steel spring barrel with restored blued steel stackfreed planted on the back plate, verge escapement with restored blued steel foliot balance, the strike train with steel going barrel and restored calibrated steel countwheel with central brass ring, the alarm train within the centre of the movement with a smaller steel barrel, the back plate engraved with strapwork and tight foliate scrolls with stippled reserves, the movement cover plate similarly engraved with geometric strapwork and foliate scrolls and with small bun feet to each corner to facilitate taking readings from the engraved sundial to the reverse set with compass and engraved gnomon, a rectangular panel beneath engraved with an artist seated beside a tree drawing a ruin in the backround, the case with elaborate three-quarter columns cast with acanthus leaves on truncated fluted columns and resting on foliate engraved feet, the panels decorated with entrelac strapwork and foliage on a hatched ground 5¼in. (13.5cm.) square, 4in. (10.5cm.) high
