A George IV silver cased watch by Richard Webster, 43 Cornhill, London, No. 5479, the silvered dial with engine turned dial centre, the plain chapter ring with Roman numerals, gold hands and blued steel sweep seconds hand, the lever escapement with plain gold balance with spiral steel balance spring and regulator, fusee and chain, in silver and silver gilt case engine turned back, 55mm diameter (gross weight 140 grammes), hallmarked London 1823 and with case maker's mark "J.D." (James Dow, St James's Buildings, Clerkenwell) Note: Possibly Richard Webster recorded working 43 Cornhill, London, apprenticed 1800, member of the Clockmakers Company 1807, liveryman of the Clockmakers Company 1810-1840. This watch is illustrated in Watches by Cecil Clutton and George Daniels, Batsford, 1965 - plates 474 and 475 - this watch is rare example for the transition from the full plate English movement to the three-quarter plate
