A GEORGE III TWO-COLOUR GOLD SNUFF-BOX SET WITH A MINIATURE by Alexander James Strachan (fl. 1799 - c. 1850), marked, struck with the English duty mark for gold 1798-1821, the London assay office mark 1756-1821, London date letter 'O' for May 1809 - May 1810, the English post-1798 standard mark for 18ct. gold, and the English standard mark for 18ct. gold 1798-1974, the miniature by Anne Mee (1770/1775-1851) Heavy rectangular box, the sides and base engraved with wavy horizontal engine-turning forming a pattern of floating small peaked lozenges, the lid inset with a large glazed portrait miniature of Frances Anne, 2nd Viscountess Hawarden, half-length, facing right in pink dress with blue sash, her right hand clasping her long muslin shawl, wearing rich pearl jewellery, framed by a raised matted gold band cast with garlands of clover with ribbons in the corners, the base bordered with a raised swag of leaves, the inside of the lid engraved 'The Right Hon.. b l e Frances Anne Viscountess Hawarden Anne Mee _ Pinx t 1810' 46 in. (113 mm.) wide
