A George III gold mourning ring dedicated to the Honourable General James Murray dated 1794, the gold band applied with the dedication 'Hon Genl Murray Ob 18 June 1794 AE 74', hallmarked London 1794, maker's mark W H, finger size P James Murray was born in 1721, a younger son of Alexander Murray, Lord Elibank. Following active service in the Seven Years War and in the War of the Austrian Succession, his military career continued in Canada in the 15th Regiment of Foot where he served under General James Woolfe. Murray subsequently became the military commander of Quebec City, and in 1764 Murray became the first Civil Governor of the Province of Quebec. Following his recall from Quebec in 1776, Murray became Governor of Minorca between 1774 and 1782, until being forced to surrender after a seven month siege of Port Mahon by a Franco-Spanish force, earning him the nick name 'Old Minorca Murray'. His last official posts were Governor of Kingston Upon Hull (1783) and Colonel of the 21st Regiment (1789). Murray died at his home in Sussex, Beauport Park, on 18th June 1794.
