Viscount Falkland - A George II sterling silver twin handled cup and cover, London 1749 by William Cripps (reg. 31st Aug 1743) Of baluster form upon a circular foot, the twin double C scroll handles with acanthus caps terminating in female masks. The body with embossed decoration in high relief of flower heads and C scroll, the centre with an asymmetrical rocaille C scroll cartouche engraved with a quartered coat of arms edged with rocaille. The handles with flat chased decoration of rocaille and C scrolls. The double domed pull off lid surmounted by a compressed circular knop finial with flat chased rocaille work. The lid with embossed decoration of C scrolls and flower heads, as well as spiral fluting. The foot with flat chased rocaille work and C scrolls. Fully marked underneath and fully marked to lid bezel, also with scratch weight underneath 64=8. Height – 29.4 cm / 11.5 inches Length – 30.3 cm / 12 inches Weight – 1985 grams / 63.82 ozt The arms are for Cary quartering Lucas quartering Beaufort At this time the Viscount was Lucius Charles Cary, 7th Viscount Falkland (c.1707 -1785). Lucius Charles was the eldest son of Lucius Cary, the 6th Viscount Falkland (1687-1730) and his wife, Dorothy Molyneux (d.1722). He succeeded as the 7th Viscount upon the death of his father on the 31st December 1730. Lucius Charles firstly married Jane Villiers (c.1710 - 1751), the widow of James Fitzgerald Villiers, Lord Villiers (1708-1732) and daughter and co-heiress of Richard Butler, of London on the 16th April 1734. He married secondly, Sarah Howard (d.1776), the widow of Henry Howard, the 10th Earl of Suffolk (1706-1745) and daughter of Thomas Inwen, of Southwark the 10th October 1752. His paternal grandmother was Anne Lucas (d.1709) daughter of Charles Lucas, 2nd Baron Lucas (1649-1688). While this engraving does not have space for a Viscount’s coronet, it is also not impaled, the Viscount was only unmarried for less than a year between December 1751 to Oct 1752. This rather small window for this engraving leads to the possibility, even though it lacks cadency marks that it might be for the son of the above Lucius Ferdinand Cary, Master of Falkland (1735–1780), where he married Anne Leith, daughter of Colonel Alexander Leith, at Gibraltar on 28 November 1757. Provenance: Possibly - The late Rt. Hon. Viscount Falkland; Christie's, London, 25 January 1922
