A GEORGE II RED AND GILT-JAPANNED BUREAU-CABINET Made for the Spanish market Decorated overall with Chinese scenes of figures following various leisure pursuits within garden landscapes with pagodas, and with various birds, chased by grotesque beasts, the arched broken pediment with overhanging waisted cornice and lobed central opening, above two bevelled mirror-inset doors, enclosing to the reverse green lacquer panels of a Chinese figure smoking a pipe, and a fitted interior with seven pigeon-holes, above two doors enclosing a further fitted interior, flanked by two concealed upright drawers with stop-fluted semi-detached column fronts, and by folio racks, above five variously- sized drawers and two candle-slides, the bureau with slanting fallfront and reading support, enclosing a fitted interior with a central arched door with putti to the handles, flanked by stop-fluted semi-detached column-fronted concealed drawers, various pigeon-holes and four drawers with two concealed drawers and a well with sliding top, the lower section with two short and two long graduated drawers, above a shaped apron and lobed turned tapering legs, replacements to cornice, one drawer and one column of the interior of the bureau section later, the feet early 19th Century, decoration distressed and with refreshments 41in. (104cm.) wide; 89in. (226cm.) high; 23in. (58.5cm.) deep
