A George II carved giltwood wall bracket, circa 1735, in the manner of William Kent of scrolled and acanthus-carved volute form, with sanded grounds to the sides, , the back bearing the partial dealer trade label of 'JOHN LANE/ Ornamental Carver + Gilder Dealer in Prints Old Shells China bells & c. / MANUFACTURER/ SHELL VASE & BRACKETS/ COLORED PRINTS AND SCRAPS FOR SCREENS/ SCREENS MOUNTED OR FRAMED/ 22 Clifford Terrace, Knightsbridge...PICTURES CLEANED LINED &RESTORED', 58cm high, 29cm wide, 28cm deep This bracket relates to brackets at Rousham House, Oxfordshire designed by William Kent as well as examples from Tottenham Park, Wiltshire, now held in the Victoria and Albert Museum. During the 1730s Lord Burlington introduced a more elaborate version of the Rousham brackets for displaying busts in the octagonal banqueting saloon of his villa at Chiswick (R. Hewlings, Chiswick House, London, 1989, p.9). This same pattern is also recorded at Devonshire House, London - dating from both the 1730's and 1820's for the improvements carried out by the 6th Duke of Devonshire. A further related pattern of bracket is illustrated in J. Vardy, Some Designs of Mr. Inigo Jones and Mr. William Kent 1744 (pl.20). Stone brackets based on this design are at Houghton Hall, Norfolk (A. Moore, Houghton Hall, London, 1996, p. 113). A pair of brackets of comparable design sold Christie's London 'A View over Eaton Square', 10 November 2005, lot 316. Two giltwood wall brackets bearing a labels inscribed 'John Lane of Knightsbridge', sold Sotheby's 30 November 1962, lot 214 (See Geoffrey Beard and Christopher Gilbert, The Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660-1840, 1986, p. 525). The entry suggests that Lane traded during the early 19th century which suggests that he may have re-gilded the two brackets here for the purposes of retailing them.
