A full-page Safavid-style illustration, Indian miniature on paper [India (Deccan), c.1700] single leaf, ink and gouache on paper, depicting a lady with a musical instrument being faced by an armed soldier with a raised sword, with a saddled horse drinking water from a lake in the foreground, heightened in gold and silver, reverse blank, turquoise colours a little oxidised with slight cracking and losses to ink, small hole with loss to lower edge of lady's garments, some smudges and early ink stains, 282 by 195 mm. An interesting and early example of Deccani illustrators using Persian influences in their techniques and painting miniatures in this Safavid style. The absence of text here suggests that this miniature was either drawn for use in an album, or perhaps used as a practice sheet by the artists, to perfect their Safavid painting techniques.
