A. Frilli: After the Antique: A carved white marble figure of Mercury
1st half 20th century signed A Frilli, Florence on later Italian limestone pedestal 165cm.; 65ins high; 221cm.; 87ins high overall This statue is first recorded in 1536 when it was in the statue court of the Belvedere. By 1568 it was in the Palazzo Pitti and by 1734 in the Uffizi where it still stands. Antonio Frilli, Ltd., Florence, Italy. The firm supplied principally artworks and furniture for export. American tourists on the Grand Tour stayed in nearby hotels in the Piazza Ognissanti and browsed through the workshops in the Via dei Foss. Named after the sculptor from the first half of the nineteenth century, the Frilli gallery became a limited liability corporation after the Second World War. In 1960 the current owner~s father conjoined the old sculpture firms of Pietro Bazzanti and Antonio Frilli, but, unfortunately, the flood of 1966 destroyed most of the firms records. Antonio Frilli, Limited, recently cast reproductions of Ghiberti~s Porta del Paradiso on the Baptistry in Florence. Literature: Antique Garden Ornament, Barbara Israel Harry. N. Abrams, Inc. Publishers.
