A French tortoiseshell and piqué work bound Paroissien Romain or prayer book, last quarter 19th century, Edition Bijou containing Sunday offices with extracts from the Roman breviary and missal, published in French and Latin by Laplace, Sanchez et Cie of Paris, and with engravings by Edouard Follet (French, fl. 19th century), the binding inlaid with a silver cartouche reserve in Orientalist taste and gold and silver foliate designs, 11cm high, 9cm wide; with an aide-mémoire en suite, an ivory note card and silver coloured propelling pencil within, 10cm high, 7cm wide; and a coin purse en suite, 5cm long, 8cm high, all monogrammed AR to a central inlaid cartouche The technique of piqué work, which involves impressing softened tortoiseshell with intricate designs of gold, silver and mother-of-pearl before it hardens into shape, became popular at the Bourbon court of Naples in the 18th century. The present lot represents a later high point in the history of piqué work, when its manufactory had spread across Europe and its use had expanded to include objects for everyday usage
