Lot 1490 A French Second Empire Sienna marble mantel clock A French Second Empire Sienna marble mantel clock, 11.5cm enamel dial inscribed with Roman numerals, Breguet hands, 14-day movement striking on a bell, the backplate signed C de Touche, 228 R(ue) St. Martin 230, No. 25923, arched case, ropetwist and lotus bezel, tall moulded plinth base, 42cm high, c. 1860 The maker, Chev. Constantin-Louis Detouche (1810-1889) was one of the most important mid-19th century clockmakers in France. He took over his father's business, founded in 1803, in the mid-1830s and made many horological improvements, and between 1845-and 1859 was joined as chef d'atelier by the renowned mechanician Jacques-Francois Houdin. In the 1860s he was appointed clockmaker to Emperor Napoleon III. During theThird Republic, his firm also retailed clocks, especially those by Japy Freres.For his efforts he was made a Knight of the Danish Order iof the Dannebrog and a Chevalier of the Legion d'Honneur.
