STANDARD, POST 1838 Opaque dark blue enamel surfaces with engraved gold foliate scrollwork, cover with rose-diamond set initial N within laurel wreath with crown above for Napoleon III , base with foliate scrollwork around a vacant reserve, sides with six foliate straps, engraved to front rim with retailer's details G.Lemonnier, Joaillier de la Couronne, 25 Place Vendôme , interior of cover inscribed in English:- Presented by their Majesties the Emperor and Empress of the French, to Mr. Nathan Thompson Jr. of New York, U.S.A. as a testimony of his Genius for inventing an invaluable Self Adjusting Life Preserving Seat which is destined to render important services to humanity, 7th April, 1855, Palace of the Tuileries 3 3/16 in. long (8.1 cm.)
