Beschreibung:

A French sculpted limestone bust of the Virgin, 14th century, portrayed wearing a cowl and a gem carved crown, above a serene visage with finely modelled features, above drapery carved with gem set collars and edging, minor traces of paint in places overall, 40cm high, 36cm wide Stylistic comparisons can be made with various examples of French 14th century portrayals of the Virgin. One such is a painted and gilded limestone group of the Virgin and Child, of circa 1310 - 1320 held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. In that work, the arrangement of the crown and cowl, with curled tresses of the fringe visible beneath is similar to the portrayal in the lot offered here, and the crown itself is also of a corresponding style. The facial features too whilst being extremely finely modelled, are formalised to a high degree Other examples with these stylistic elements include a late 13th century carved and painted ivory group, also held at the Metropolitan Museum; and the renowned early 14th century marble, the Virgin of Paris at the Cathedral of Notre Dame Provenance: Private Collection, London Previously: Galerie Charles Ratton, Paris Condition report disclaimer
