A FRENCH ORMOLU AND JASPERWARE-MOUNTED MAHOGANY, TULIPWOOD, AMARANTH, SYCAMORE AND MARQUETRY CYLINDER BUREAU BY EMMANUEL-ALFRED ( DIT ALFRED II) BEURDELEY (1847-1919), AFTER THE MODEL BY JEAN-FRANÇOIS OEBEN AND JEAN HENRI RIESENER, CIRCA 1890 The top inlaid with mythological attributes, emblems of the Arts and flowers, within a three-quarter balustrade gallery cornered by urns, centered with a festooned clock flanked by putti, the double-dial movement signed Passement / Hger du Roy / A PARIS , over a tambour roll-top inlaid to the center with marquetry attributes and flanked by medallions inscribed NON. NISI. GRANDIA. CANTO. / IRRIDENS. CUSPIDE. FIGO. and Brevi. Complector. Singula. cani / PastoRum. Carmina. ludo (from Iconologia by Cesare Ripa), the roll-top operated by a key-driven wheel mechanism, enclosing three pull-out trays flanked to each side by three drawers veneered with flower-filled trellis parquetry, the gilt-tooled brown leather writing surface with pop-up central panel with folding folio stand and three further drawers, above a kneehole flanked to each side by a twin-divided drawer, the angles each with a fully-modeled gilt-bronze recumbent figure representing Apollo and Calliope each supporting a twin-light scrolled acanthus candelabrum, the marquetry paneled bombé sides with emblems of Terrestrial and Marine warfare right and left, above laurel swags and jasperware medallions of L’Amour et L’Hyménée and Les Trois Grâces between marquetry panels of earthly and oceanic riches emerging from cornucopia, the back with central relief cast plaque with the Seven Cardinal Virtues represented by putti and a portrait medallion of Louis XV, flanked to the right with marquetry emblems of Geometry, and to the left with Astronomy, signed fait par Riesener / à l'Arsenal 1769 , above laurel swagged floral marquetry panels, the angles each with Hercules' club festooned with laurel, the apron wreathed in acanthus, the hipped cabriole legs headed by lion pelts running to scroll feet, the ormolu mounts variously marked to the reverse ‘BY’ 57 in. (145 cm.) high, 74 in. (188 cm.) wide, 38 in. (97 cm.) deep Provenance Oscar Heineman, Chicago, Illinois, by 1918.
