A First World War D.C.M group of four medals with China Medal and Delhi Durbar Medal to Kerry King, D.C.M (16083 Sjt. K. King No.2 MTN: BTY. R.G.A), China, Defence of Legations (engraved in script 8333 Pte. K. King R.M.L.I) 1914-15 Star (16083 Sjt. K. King R.G.A.) British War and Victory medals (2nd Lieut K. King) Delhi Durbar 1911 (No 16083 Bombr. K. King No.2 M.B.R.G.A. Delhi Durbar 1911). D.C.M. London Gazette 14th January 1916 Appointment of 2 Lieut. R.G.A. K. A. Killie, Peking. 2nd. Lieutenant Kerry King was born on 12th September 1878 in the parish of St. Helens, Abingdon, Berkshire, the son of Peter King Kerry King was enlisted in the Royal Marines as a Private in London on 7th December 1896 on a twelve year engagement. His certificate of Service notes that his trade was as a Billiard Marker and his official service number was Plymouth 8333. R.M. Company 'C'. His service in The Royal Marine Light Infantry was from 7th December 1896 until 19th March 1903. Afloat he served on HMS Sirius, HMS Vivid, HMS Centurion, HMS Undaunted, HMS Hermione, HMS Centurion for the second time and HMS Glory. His total service was five years and one hundred and three days. He was finally discharged from the service at the Royal Marines Barracks, Plymouth on 19th March 1902 by purchase in the sum of £20. His character and ability were recorded as 'Very Good' and he was granted a good conduct badge. In June 1900 he was engaged in Defence of Her Britannic Majesty's Legation, Peking. 31st December 1900 he was wounded in action and sustained a bullet wound to his back. Granted hurt certificate. Commended by The Admiralty, A.L.M. 15219, 6th December 1900. Kerry King enlisted at Brighton on a Short Service Engagement with the Royal Garrison Artillery on 20th July 1903 and was given the number 16083. His trade on elistment was recorded as Policeman. He joined at Dover on 29th July 1903 - No. 1 Depot Company R.G.A. He was posted to 37 Coy. R.G.A. on 22nd August 1903, having married the day before Florence nee Parks at Dover Register Office. He passed the course of Instruction in gun-laying on 6th March 1905 and extended his service to complete eight years with the colours 3rd August 1905. Posted to No. 2 Mountain Battery R.G.A. 18th October 1906. Appointed paid acting Bombardier 22nd October 1908, promoted Bombardier 1st March 1910. Extended service to complete twelve years with colours 2nd December 1910. Promoted Corporal 1st February 1912, promoted Sergeant 19th October 1914. Embarked Southampton 9th December 1914 and disembarked in France the following day. Embarked Marseilles 20th December 1915 and disembarked Salonika 30th December 1915. Re-engaged in the Field to complete twenty one years service with the colours 27th May 1916. Commissioned in the Field 17th May 1917. Posted to No. 7 Mountain Battery, 3rd Mountain Artillery Brigade R.G.A. 1st September 1917. 2nd. Lieutenant Kerry King died of wounds on 25th September 1918 and was buried at Doiran ( Dojran ) Military Cemetery. Overseas Service: India 18th October 1906 - 23rd August 1914 Expeditionary Force France 9th December 1914 - 30th December 1915 Salonika 31st December 1915 - 25th September 1918. Most of the Third China Medals for The Defence of Legation were issued in 1902 but Kerry King's medal was issued in 1904. It is therefore possible that the medal was engraved rather than impressed as the medal was processed as a single issue rather than in a batch. The 1911 Dehli Durbar medal was issued unnamed and it would appear that the medal was probably engraved at the recipient's request. 2nd Lieutenant Kerry King D.C.M. had six children.
