A finely detailed and important sterling silver hallmarked Carrington & Co. London 1914 presentation model of the Short S.80 mounted on a black lacquered wood plinth with silver plaque engraved ' HORACE SHORT from FK McC Alexandria to Khartoom 1914 ' Measurement overall -- 26in. (66 cm) wide; Wingspan -- 24in. (61 cm) With external details including braced airframe and wings with working elevator and fore plane controlled by the cockpit mounted control column with wheel, moveable aelerons, gondola with open cockpit with two side by side seats and opening locker behind, detailed two row 160hp Gnome rotary engine and propellor and fuel tank. Further details include main floats and rear boom mounted air bags, moveable rudders, bracing, flying and control wires and embossed wing ribs. Copy of letter as from McClean to Short d/d 9th March 1914 and other letters variously dated 23-25th Feb 1914 and; TAYLOR MJH Shorts The Planemakers, JANES 1984 signed by the author and dedicated to Joan Short See Illustration NOTE: Built to Frank McClean's requirements for his proposed Nile flight the S.80 first flew as a seaplane at Leysdown on 2nd October 1913 with Gordon Bell as pilot, and with three passengers on 19th November that year with McClean as pilot. It was shipped to Alexandria and re-erected there by McClean, Ogilvie, Horace Short and their mechanic Gus Smith, and was launched on 2nd January 1914, and flew to Cairo, 160 miles in 3 hours, the limit of its range. Fuel dumps had to be arranged at 120 mile intervals all the way to Aswan. After many trials and tribulations and several forced landings due to engine failiure McClean (pilot) and Ogilvy (navigator and engineer) reached Khartoum on 22nd March 1914. After giving joy rides the aircraft was crated and returned to England via Port Sudan and the Suez Canal. McClean gave the S.80 to the Admiralty on 1st August 1914, it being used with a lower powered engine as a training aircraft thereafter. Silver weight: 33oz troy cf: Barnes C.H.
