A fine Victorian mahogany longcase regulator Kendal and Dent, London, circa 1870 The massive eight-day six double-screwed columnar pillar movement with plates measuring 10.5 by 9.5 inches enclosing wheel train with high pinion count, six spoke wheel crossings, jewelled endstones for the pallet arbor and escapewheel rear pivot and screw depth adjustment for all other pivots terminating at the plates, with Harrison’s maintaining power and deadbeat escapement incorporating jewelled pallets regulated by mercury jar compensated seconds pendulum with fine beat adjustment to crutch, the 13.5 inch circular silvered brass dial with subsidiary seconds over Roman numeral hour dials and signed KENDAL & DENT, 106. CHEAPSIDE. LONDON., WATCHMAKERS TO, THE ADMIRALTY. to centre within outer Arabic minute track and canted silvered bezel, the movement and dial supported on a substantial cast brass bracket screwed to the case backboard and incorporating wide-jaw pendulum suspension, the arched mahogany case with curved inspection hatch to the apex of the top and double locks to the full width bevel-glazed door, on plinth base with complex top mouldings, applied panel outline to front and moulded skirt, 198cm (78ins) high. The partnership between James Francis Kendal and John Gilder Dent is recorded in Loomes, Brian Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World, Volume 2 as working from 106 Cheapside, London from 1881 until around 1927. They were well known watch retailers and jewellers who are listed in trade directories as watchmakers for 1882, 1891, 1899, 1902, 1910 and 1915. In 1892 Kendal published a History of Watches and Other Timepieces.
