A FINE SAFAVID ENGRAVED BRASS TORCHSTAND rising from a spreading base with raised vertical rim resting on three shaped feet to the columnar thick shaft divided into three registers by raised bands, the mouth with everted lip, each of the lower two registers of the shaft divided into vertical panels containing cusped nasta'liq inscription cartouches between meandering vine stripes, the ground of each filled with black composition, the base with three bands of similar narrower inscription cartouches on black or red grounds divided by green ground palmette roundels, outer similar floral band, the feet with black ground arabesques, the mouth with three bands similar to the base, the upper side of the rim with an inscription cartouche in the name of the owner, late 16th century (a very little coloured composition ground missing) 13in. (33cm.) high
