A fine lacquered-brass compound binocular microscope Powell & Lealand, 170 Euston Street, London. Numbered/dated 1869 The binocular body-tube with rack and pinion eyepiece adjustment, screwing onto a short limb from the main pillar, with rack and pinion focusing and micrometer fine adjustment, a sliding prism box above the nosepiece engraved For Low Powers & Opaque Objects , the complex mechanical stage with rotating movement and an index to read off the main circumference scale 0-360°, with a complex substage condensor and large plano-concave substage mirror, the whole arranged to tilt on an axis atop a heavy tripod foot, with a tabletop bull's-eye condensor, contained in a fitted mahogany carrying case with brass handle -- 19½in. (49.5cm.) high; with a separate fitted mahogany case of accessories including two large eyepieces, one stamped R , three further eyepieces, one stamped around the rim POWELL & LEALAND 15 NELSON'S FORMULA , three empty eyepiece mounts, a monocular body-tube, a Leitz no.3 objective in a brass canister, a Beck x45 objective in a brass canister marked 1/8, a x8 objective by F. Koristka Milano in a brass canister, a Zeiss AA objective and a Ross 3in. objective in a brass canister, together with various other accessories including a brass canister containing various oxidised-brass pierced discs, stage forceps, two substage filter attachments, a second prism box for inserting above the nosepiece, engraved Powell & Lealand N o.46 PATENT in a purple plush and white silk-lined maroon leatherette-covered case with a brass hook and eye, and a second case for the other prism, and various other items, all in the original fitted mahogany case 12¾ in.
