ATTRIBUTED TO TOSHU, MEIJI PERIOD (LATE 19TH CENTURY)
A FINE LACQUER BUNDAI [WRITING-TABLE] AND SUZURIBAKO [WRITING-BOX] Attributed to Toshu, Meiji Period (Late 19th Century) The bundai of the usual form, the upper surface decorated in gold nashiji gold flakes suspended in clear lacquer] and kirikane [flakes and squares of foil], gold and silver takamaki-e [high-relief lacquer] and other lacquer techniques with fishing boats pulled up on a pine-clad beach, the metal fittings of chiselled silver, the legs and underside finished in gold nashiji ; the en-suite suzuribako similarly decorated and complete with ink-stick, gold nashiji lacquer sumitori [ink-holder], knife, two brushes, skewer and silver suiteki [water-dropper] worked with wave and plum-blossom designs, the suzuri [inkstone] missing, each with a fitted box inscribed respectively Suma no ura maki-e bundai [writing-table with lacquer design of Suma Bay] and Suma no ura maki-e suzuribako [writing-box with lacquer design of Suma Bay] and signed Maki-e-shi Toshu saku [made by lacquer-master Toshu] with a seal Toshu The bundai : 13.8 x 37.1 x 64.1cm. The suzuribako : 5.2 x 26 x 23.4cm.
