A FINE IVORY NETSUKE OF A CRANE BY BISHU Katalognummer: NE1118-113 Ivory netsuke Japan, Tokyo 20th century The crane is carved with a long neck, turning backwards and resting its beak on its body. The unstained ivory is well finished, and the plumage is carved very accurately. Note the beautiful legs of the crane, which are carved naturalistically with good detail. Himotoshi on the underside with the signature BISHU. Bishu is listed in Miriam Kinsey’s Contemporary carvers on page 220 and she writes: “the freedom of expression and the carving expertise currently shown by Bishu have created works that will no doubt summon converts to the collection of contemporary netsuke” – This sentence is very fitting for this netsuke, as the traditional form coupled with the freedom of expression evident in this crane, truly gives merit to the collecting of contemporary netsuke, which may be underappreciated at times.
