Beschreibung:

A fine French onyx, gilt metal and champleve enamel mounted columnar pedestal, late 19th / early 20th century, probably Barbedienne Foundry or Cornu for Gustave Viot et Cie., the revolving rectangular platform atop a circular capital, above a collar cast as a coronet with enamel decoration in blues, pink, red and yellow; the tapering shaft descending past confirming enameled collars to a square base, 109cm high, the top 35 x 22cm From 1858 the sculptor Eugène Cornu (1827 ~ 1899) worked as a designer and project manager for the firm of Gustave Viot et Cie., which was later incorporated with the the Onyx Marble Company of Algeria. The firm specialised in the production of high quality works of art incorporating champlevé enamel with gilt bronze and onyx. The stylistic forms and very decorative nature of the items proved to be very popular and it was not long before the already renowned foundry of Fedinand Barbedienne began to produce similar work
