A FINE AND RARE BLUE AND WHITE JAR, GUAN Ming dynasty, Yongle period (1403-1425) The jar of well-balanced proportions with elegantly rounded sides, a slightly waisted foot and a short-lipped neck, well-painted in underglaze cobalt blue, with 'heaping and piling', the sides decorated with flowers of the seasons, peony, lotus, chrysanthemum and camellia, each flower with two large blooms and some smaller flowers and buds amidst leaves on branching stems, all between a band of overlapping straight leaves around the foot and a collar of lotus lappets enclosing trefoil motifs around the shoulder, the short-lipped neck decorated with two double lines, the base and the low footrim unglazed displaying the smooth white body, body star crack overpainted, rim chip restored, glaze worn 7/8 in. (25.1 cm.) high
