A fine and detailed early 19th Century French prisoner-of-war bone model of the 100 gun First Rate 'Royal Sovereign' -- 7½ x 8in (19 x 20.3cm) With masts, spars with stun's'l booms, standing and running rigging, carved warrior figurehead, anchors, catheads, anchor float, belaying rails, gratings, deck rails, companionway, deck houses, capstan and ship's boat (detached) , carved stern and quarter galleries with painted decorated bulwarks, stern and red gun ports and black strakes. Mounted on two bone stands on decorated wood base with pierced bone surround. Glazed case with plaques inscribed 'Model made by French prisoners from the Napoleon Wars whilst captive in Britain, 1794-1817' and ~H.M.S. Royal Sovereign 100 guns. Built at Plymouth, 1786. She took part in the Glorious First of June, 1794 but it is better known as Vice Admiral Collingwood's flagship at Trafalgar, 1805' See illustration
