A DUTCH WALNUT AND BURR WALNUT STRIKING LONGCASE CLOCK WITH 'SCHEEPJESMECHANIEK' (AUTOMATON SHIPS) A. VAN OOSTROM, AMSTERDAM. MID 18TH CENTURY The case of typical form, the hood surmounted with giltwood figural finials, the door and bombé plinth with foliage and chevron inlays, the trunk door with cast brass lenticle depicting the rape of Europe, on claw and ball feet, the brass dial with engraved border, silvered chapter ring signed A=VAN OOSTROM/AMSTELDAM , foliate and C-scroll spandrels to the corners, matted and engraved centre with subsidiary seconds ring with date aperture, blued steel hands, sectors for month and day of week and moon phase below, the polychrome decorated arch with five rocking ships, a windmill and a shepherd in front of a town scene of Amsterdam, four pillar movement with anchor escapement and Dutch strike on two bells; pendulum, two large brass weights; crank key and door key 295 cm. high
