A DIAMOND BROOCH, BY FRED PARIS The stylised openwork foliate set with round brilliant-cut diamonds throughout, mounted in 18K white and yellow gold, diamonds approximately 8.50cts total, signed Fred Paris, French assay marks, length 5.7cm My creations are inspired by the life, the light, the movement, the energy Fred Samuel. Fred Samuel (1908-2006) established his jewellery brand in 1936 in Paris, where he spent much of his professional life. Originally from Buenos Aires, he lived a life that was exceptionally rich in adventure and cultural exploration, never losing sight of his South American sensibilities in his designs. As a man who was born into a family that dealt in precious stones, it was no surprise that Fred conceived a passion for jewels and their exceptional nature. During World War II, Fred Samuel fled Paris and became an interpreter for the Allies. Later, in the post-war era, he apoted the singular title Fred for his brand after it was imposed by German occupiers instead of 'Fred Samuel,' because of the Jewish origins of its founder. Despite these times of hardship for Fred, he never lost sight of his independent vision for his brand. This vision was to imbue in his jewellery a sense life through his exploration of self, drawing upon the vivacity of his Argentinean roots in his wonderfully colourful and playful jewellery designs. Fred described himself as a Contemporary Creative Jeweller in 1936, staking a claim for modernity based on his striking jewellery designs made up dynamic curves and sinuous lines. In the 1950s, he is said to have discovered the truly exceptional capacity of natural gemstones and colourful diamonds, fast attracting a vast clientele ranging from Marlène Dietrich to the royal family of Monaco, including princess Grace. In 1966, Fred Paris introduced the Force 10 collection, consisting of cable jewellery made of stainless steel. This was based off of another of Freds lifelong passions, sport, and still remains very prominent today in ring, bracelet, pendant and necklace designs. As the brand grew, new stores were opened across the world; Monte Carlo in 1976, Cannes in 1981 Tokyo in 2001 and Beijing, Dubai and Bogotá in 2007, a true testament to Freds lasting and universal international appeal. This attention has transcended upon Hollywood, with Fred Paris designing the iconic 23 heart-cut ruby necklace interlaced with diamonds, gifted to Julia Roberts by Richard Gere in the film Pretty Woman. More recently, Fred Paris provided jewellery for the James Bond film, Casino Royale, starring Daniel Craig and Caterina Murino who was adorned with a yellow gold diamond and citrine pendant and earrings from the Star collection. ---- This stunning brooch offered by Adams at auction, truly showcases Freds sense of wonderment of the world, echoed in the intricacies of his design. The brooch depicts a stylised branch with a multitude of sprouting leaves. These are brought to life with a dynamic three-dimensional form that is the perfect setting for the stunning pavé diamonds which are seen throughout, reflective of light at every angle.
