A CONTINENTAL ROCOCO GOLD-MOUNTED LACQUER CARNET-DE-BAL SET WITH A MINIATURE possibly Scandinavian or German, circa 1770, the flange struck with an unidentifed mark Slightly tapering rectangular étui-à-tablettes with arched top, of oblong section, decorated overall with a pattern of brass cogs on a rust-brown lacquer ground, the gold mounts engraved with a chevron pattern including stylized leaves, the obverse and reverse of the cover applied with pierced gold inscription SOUVENIR D'AMITIE within fluted gold borders with bow cresting and hung with garlands of leaves with roses, the reverse of the base centred by a glazed oval medallion containing a miniature of a lady wearing a muslin veil in her upswept grey powdered hair, the reverse with identically framed and glazed foliate and engraved gilt-metal monogram 'HB' on a plaited brown hair panel; silver-riveted three-leaved shaped tablets inside 3 15/16 in. (100 mm.) high
