With engraved frontispiece, 1 plate, and 8 (of 9) folding or double-page copper-engraved maps by Herman Moll (Folio) 31x19.5 cm. (12x7½"), modern full calf in a period style. First Edition. Extensive history of British naval accomplishments. Josiah Burchett (1666-1746) was Secretary of the Admiralty in England, a position he held for almost fifty years (1694-1742). He was first a clerk to Samuel Pepys, the English civil servant famous for his diary. Burchett eventually fell out of favor with Pepys, but gained the respect and favor of Lord Admiral Edward Russell and eventually was appointed Secretary of the Admiralty. Lot Amendments Condition: Foxing and old staining within; several maps with old tape repairs, one map with a wide strip detached; good in a fine modern binding. Item number: 282700
