A collection of pottery oil lamps, including a large Greek pottery oil lamp with rounded shoulder and wide central hole, on a slightly raised base, the spout angled slightly upwards, with a small pierced lug handle at the shoulder, circa 3 rd Century B.C . , 15.8cm long, 6.3cm high; a grey glazed Roman oil lamp, crisply decorated with foliage and trumpet-shaped decoration around the central hole; another with a multi-petalled rosette, a third with a worn petal design around the central hole, each with a maker's mark on the underside of the base, circa 1 st Century A.D.; two Romano-Egyptian 'frog' lamps, one with the clear outline of the frog in relief around the central hole, the other with two palm branches around the hole, both with maker's marks impressed on the underside of the base, circa 3 rd -4 th Century A.D; and a heavy pottery lamp in the form of the head of an African, the hair arranged into tresses, the nozzle formed from the extended face, probably Roman and an early Islamic pottery oil lamp with rounded shoulder and ridge around the broad central hole (8) Provenance: By repute acquired by Sir William Whitfield in Newcastle upon Tyne in the early 1940's
