Stone, 1/4th Battalion, Devonshire Regiment, died of wounds at Kut, 18 March 1916 Distinguished Conduct Medal, G.V.R. (2252 Pte., 1/4 Devon R.-T.F.); 1914-15 Star (2252 Pte., Devon R.); Victory Medal 1914-19, M.I.D. oak leaf (2252 Pte., Devon R.); Memorial Plaque (Edward Henry Stone ; together with an erased British War Medal 1914-20 Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., V.R. (Fredk. Stone, Boatn. H.M. Coast Guard) this last with minor edge bruising, good very fine; group nearly extremely fine (6) £1200-1600 Footnote D.C.M. London Gazette 12 December 1917. (No citation). M.I.D. London Gazette 13 July 1916. Edward Henry Stone was born in Portland, Dorset. Enlisting into the 4th Battalion Devonshire Regiment, he was posted to India, travelling aboard the Nevasa in September 1914. There, they were based at Ferozepore. Stone was a member of a draft under Lieutenant Snell despatched to the 2nd Battalion Dorsetshire Regiment in Mesopotamia. The draft arrived in time to take part in the advance up the Tigris under General Townsend. Stone distinguished himself in the operations but died of wounds during the siege of Kut on 18 March 1916, aged 26 years. He was buried in the Kut War Cemetery. He was the son of Frederick and Mary Stone of Plymouth. The R.N. Long Service Medal was awarded to his father. Sold with copied research including details on the fall of Kut.
