A COLLECTION OF FIVE LEAVES FROM ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPTS ON VELLUM, early 14th to 15th centuries, comprising
A COLLECTION OF FIVE LEAVES FROM ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPTS ON VELLUM, early 14th to 15th centuries, comprising: a leaf from a Psalter, [northern France, c.1300], 18 lines, approximately 95 x 70mm, with three-line initial opening Psalm 31, with extensions the height of the margin with terminals incorporating an animal head and a peasant blowing a horn; a leaf from a Book of Hours, [Rouen, c.1500], 20 lines, approximately 100 x 97mm, with text from the Hours of the Virgin (lauds), two-line initials and a panel border of single-stemmed naturalistic flowers on a liquid gold ground inhabited by a monster. The border is perhaps attributable to Jean Serpin, a specialist in the secondary decoration of manuscripts who regularly collaborated with Robert Boyvin on manuscripts for Cardinal Georges d'Amboise; a leaf from a Bible, [northern France, later 13th century], 47 lines, approximately 93 x 60mm, with five-line initial opening the Second Epistle to Peter (lightly waterstained). All three leaves window-mounted and set in an early 20th-century patterned gilt frame. Together with : a leaf from a Book of Hours, [France, probably Paris, c.1410], 14 lines, approximately 130 x 105mm, with text from the Hours of the Virgin (end of prime), two two-line initials with foliate infills on burnished gold, with ivy-rinceaux extensions, similarly framed; a leaf from a Book of Hours, [France, c.1440], 14 lines, approximately 145 x 95mm, with two-line initial opening Lesson IX from the Office of the Dead, with burnished gold bar-border and three-quarter border of scrolling acanthus and fruit interspersed with hairline tendrils with burnished gold foliate and disk terminals, similarly framed.
