A collection of 23 fragments of manuscripts in Syriac, Coptic, Armenian, Latin, Dutch, and Church Slavonic, mostly on vellum 23 fragments, (i) a part leaf on vellum of a magical charm, in Syriac, 110mm. by 100mm., divided into squares and circles, decorative border, written both horizontally and diagonally, approximately ninth century, from the collection of Eric von Scherling (d.1956), closely similar to the example reproduced in H. Gollancz, The Book of Protection, being a Collection of Charms, Syriac Magic Texts, 1912 (reprinted 1976), pp.3-4; (ii-iii) two fragments of Coptic manuscripts, on vellum, approximately ninth to twelfth century, one with part of a large coloured drawing, apparently a decorated arcade; (iv) a fragment in Armenian, on vellum, approximately thirteenth century; (v-vi) two very small pieces of a Latin manuscript, c.1200; (vii) a leaf from a Latin Bible (Jeremiah 25:29 to 28:4), double column, 47 lines, red initials, 197mm. by 145mm., thirteenth century; (viii-ix) two pieces from a noted Breviary, in Latin and Dutch, late thirteenth century, from the collection of Eric von Scherling, in an orange folder; (x) a strip from a Latin manuscript of scholastic quaestiones, 66 lines here, red paragraph-marks, England, early fourteenth century; (xi) a leaf on paper, double column, c.51 lines, apparently philosophical, with many references to ‘bomolochus’, fourteenth century; (xii) a bifolium from a noted Missal, in Latin, part of the Mass for Holy Saturday (eve of Easter), gothic script, red and blue initials, hufnagelschrift musical notation, lower edge defective; (xiii-xiv) two leaves from a manuscript of patristic texts, including the dialogues of Gregory the Great, double column, 40 lines, southern Netherlands, fifteenth century, from the collection of Otto Ege (1888-1951, bought from Thorp, Guildford, c.1925), from the same manuscript as lot 70 in our rooms, 26 November 1985; (xv-xvi) two pieces from a document concerning canons of Trier Cathedral, flourished initials, decorative notary’s mark, probably 1460; (xvii-xix) two charters in the name of the duke of Brabant, in Dutch, 1448, tied together with a third document, slightly later; and (xx-xxii) three leaves on paper from large manuscripts in Church Slavonic, two with music, eighteenth century, from the collection of Otto Ege, in paper folders; all on vellum unless specified otherwise, some with decoration, some very defective
