A CIVIL WAR HAND-PAINTED PRISONER OF WAR CANE Elaborately hand-painted wooden cane with approximately 100 plus panels of red, blue and white colour, layed-out in a semi-harequin pattern, each panel painted with the specifics of Civil War battles and skirmishes. Among the battles listed are "2ND B. MANASSUS" ; "SECESSIONVILLE" ; "FORT DONALDSON" ; "7 PINES" ; "BOONSBORO GAP" ; "CEDAR RUN" and "FREDRICKSBURG" . Within each battle panel are specifics listing the commanding officer, the grim statistics of battle; numbers killed, wounded and captured broken down by Yanks and Confederates . Interspersed throughout the design are numerous panels noting officers such as: Lt. Gen. John Hood Maj. Gen. Wade Hampton, Major John S. Mosby and Maj. Gen. G.W. Smith among many others. In addition many panels describe pay schedules of cavalry, infantry; human life expectancy and more. The name C.E. Wade written twice at head, the date July 20th, 1864 at base. 37 inches Accompaning this lot is a vintage newspaper clipping from Richmond, Va, titled "Cane With Names Of All Confederate Battles" discussing C.E. Wade, a citizen of Richmond Virginia who acquired this cane "made by a Confederate prisoner on Johnson's Island". The article explains that the cane was in Mr. Wade's possession for the last fourty-two years. Signed on reverse "C.E. Wade Richmond Va" .
