A CHIPPENDALE CARVED CHERRYWOOD BLOCK-FRONT DESK-AND-BOOKCASE Attributed to the School of Eliakim Smith (1735-1775), Hadley, Massachusetts, circa 1760 In two parts: the upper section with a molded broken swan's-neck pediment centering and flanked by three gilded twist-carved corkscrew and ball finials above a conforming case fitted with two arched and panelled doors opening to a three-shelved and divided interior, the whole flanked by vine-carved pilasters on stop-fluted bases; the lower section with conforming rectangular mid-molding over a rectangular and thumbmolded slant-lid opening to a fitted interior with a blocked-fan carved prospect door flanked by document drawers with applied columns with gilded twist-carved finials and pigeonholes above two tiers of blocked drawers, the whole above a conforming block-front case fitted with four graduated long drawers with cockbeaded surrounds over a molded base, on scrolled and blocked straight bracket feet 94in. high, 38in. wide, 21in. deep
