A CHINESE 'DOWAGER EMPRESS' PATTERN CONG-SHAPED VASE SIX CHARACTER GUANGXU MARK AND OF THE PERIOD 1875-1908 Painted en grisaille with the autumn pattern of hwamei birds, chrysanthemum and hibiscus blossoms against a turquoise ground, with two elephant handles and bands of key fret at the foot and flower sprays at the rim, 29.5cm. Cf. Chinese Ceramics, Selected articles from Orientations 1982-1998, R W Longsdorf, Dayazhai Ware: Porcelains of the Empress Dowager, pp.285-296, nos 5 and 20 for dishes with similar decoration. Also a pair of similar vases sold in these rooms on 21st May 2009, lot 746.
