A CHARLES II SMALL GILT-METAL MOUNTED EBONY STRIKING EIGHT DAY TABLE CLOCK WITH PULL QUARTER REPEAT

A CHARLES II SMALL GILT-METAL MOUNTED EBONY STRIKING EIGHT DAY TABLE CLOCK WITH PULL QUARTER REPEAT THOMAS TOMPION LONDON. CIRCA 1675/80 CASE: with foliate-tied faceted gilt-brass handle positioned on a moulded gilt-brass platform above a silk-backed shallow gilt-metal repoussé basket top modelled with birds, swags and foliate designs, moulded cornices, the sides with silk-backed gilt-metal frets formed as foliate scrolls and with a laurel wreath around a circular glass, typical matching bellflower escutcheons to front and rear doors, the moulded plinth raised on gilt-brass bun feet; restorations to plinth DIAL: 6 in. (15 cm.) square latched gilt-brass dial with scored line border, signed along the lower edge 'Tho. Tompion London', winged cherub masks to silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring with sword-hilt half hour markers, matted centre, blued steel hands MOVEMENT: secured to the case with bolts through the lower of eight latched pillars, twin line fusees, verge escapement with engraved backcock, brass pendulum rod with pear-shaped bob, hour strike and pull quarter repeat on two replaced bells, the repeat lever concealed behind a falseplate on the back plate, this also concealing levers for bolt and shutter work apparently replacing Tompion pre-select system, the back plate with scored line border and engraved with tulip designs to top and bottom, the back plate behind the false plate left unengraved, the falseplate also engraved with tulips around a reserve signed 'Tho. Tompion Londini Fecit'; case key 12¼ in. (31 cm.) high, handle down; 8 5/8 in. (22.75 cm.) wide; 6 in. (15 cm.) deep
